strange supply issues

Postby KJ511 » Mon Sep 24, 2012 7:37 pm

DD is 4 weeks old and nurses like a champ usually. We have been giving her one bottle of pumped milk per day because DH will need to feed her when I go back to work, so we wanted her to get used to it. I pump during the bottle feeding. When I first started I was getting probably 2 ounces total. DD has been going through a growth spurt, so nursing more and taking more from the bottles too. In the past week I was getting 3-4 ounces total and sometimes more. Just an hour ago I pumped and didn't even get a full ounce total! What is going on??? I know it might be too early to tell since it only happened once, but I'm sort of freaking out. I really hope I'm not drying up--things had been going so well!

Could be you're just a bit tapped out from a big nursing session earlier. Drink lots of water, get some rest, and nurse nurse nurse!

I wouldn't worry! If DD seems happy, sometimes the pump just doesn't cut it. My daily pumping at work varies from 8 oz-13 oz. It was hard not to freak out at first, but now I just shake my head when I have an off day. :)

Thanks for the input, ladies! It appears this was just a one-time thing. I pumped a good amount last night, although I accidentally spilled a third of it when I knocked the bottle over. Oh well. And DD has been nursing about every hour to 2 hours today, so I'm thinking another growth spurt is upon us!

You will notice that this will happen around the time that you should be getting your monthlies. It will happen again but knowing approximately 4 weeks from the last time you pumped very little to increase your water intake and your nuts/oatmeal/and bran intake as well. It will happen every month and once your PPAF returns it will coincide with that timing. It should only last a day or two and then your supply will return to normal. I have been pumping and feeding my DD for 3 years! lol so its pretty normal for me. Plus I also pump and donate to the milk bank. These udders are probably not going to dry up for some time as we are pregnant with #2 and will be EBF'ing again lol.
