Birth Control While Breastfeeding?

Postby DueInMayMamma » Sun Sep 30, 2012 8:12 am

Hey everyone! After a long talk with DH, we've decided that we may be fine with just having one baby :-) now our problem is choosing which birth control to use. Condoms seem like the obvious choice, but they're a real mood killer, and they aren't super convenient. I'm horrible with taking the pill because I always forget, so now I'm considering some type of long term (1-5 years) if there is such thing or at least one that could be removed early if we change our minds. 2 things though, I don't know if any type of those birth controls are safe while breastfeeding, or if they're really that safe period. Any thoughts or suggestions?

I had great success with the patch but I'm not sure if it's ok to use while BF

the only b/c that is know to be okay (as all b/c crosses your breastmilk) is the progesterone only pill. Or commonly called the Mini-Pill.

IUDs are considered safe while BFing and are a long term solution that requires no thought on your part. Mirena is the most common one and lasts up to 5 years, but can be removed earlier if you want it to be. There is also a copper IUD and I believe that one is good for 10 years but, again, can be removed earlier. There is also the Implanon which is an implant that goes in your arm and is good up to 3 years (and can also be removed earlier).

I use the minipill, an IUD freaks me out. I've heard good things about Mirena though. Some women have had supply issues, but most are okay.

I too am freaked out by inserting a foreign object into my uterus. :P How long have you been on the minipill? And I take it your supply is still doing great, since I see you've been BFing for 9 months (congrats!). My 6-week PP appointment is next week and I am definitely going to be discussing BC with my OB--don't want another kid for at least 2 years!

Not really sure on foolproof BC. We just used a combination of condoms and cycle charting/tracking. That can be quite effective if you educate yourself and do it right, but there is always some % of a chance with any BC that it won't work. I do know it's 100% safe for BF'ing! It worked for us for over a year until we were ready to try for #2. But we don't plan to keep it to one child so if we did by chance have an "oops" in the future we probably wouldn't mind too much :)

Has anyone heard of and/or had any experience with an implant? I think the only one available in the US right now is Nexplanon. I read that it doesn't affect milk supply, can be left in for three years, and you're immediately fertile again when it's removed. That's sounding better and better to me, but I want to make sure that no one knows of any horrible things that can happen.

I have a Mirena IUD. I think that and the mini-pill are the only options.

Just got a Nexplanon implant yesterday. It's progestin-only and I can leave it in for up to three years, and get pregnant within a week of removal. Sure beats the progestin-only minipill, which apparently you have to take within five minutes of the same time each day or you're at risk for getting pregnant! 8O My doc said 50% of the women she sees who choose the minipill come back pregnant before they want to be--soooo not interested in that! I'll keep everyone posted on how I like the Nexplanon.

Kelli--what's it like having it put in? I'd be interested in something like that! My doctor just kind of glossed over them and only really offered me the mini-pill or an IUD. I don't plan to TTC again for at least another 2 1/2 years, so that sounds perfect! What side effects might there be?

Well, the worst part is the injection of the anesthesia--burns for a few seconds, but it's no big deal. No worse than puking during labor contractions or the sting of the needle with the epidural! Then they just inject it under the skin of your arm. It's not very big, but you're supposed to be able to feel a little ridge when it's in. When they take it out they just make a little poke and pop it out, if you have no complications with it. So far no side effects with regard to the actual insertion; just a little soreness and some bruising. Here's a link to the official website. One thing I am a little nervous about is that it's possible I won't get a period, but I'll probably just do an HPT once a month just in case. I will also keep you posted as to how I'm feeling while I have it! My friend is a physician assistant and she recommends the implant to all her patients who want extended BC.

I used the mini pill until my first PPAF with my first (17 months) and then I didn't stop bleeding once AF started and switched to the Nuvaring (at that point supply was obviously well-established). I took the mini pill until DD was about 8 months old then realized it was causing serious mood swings and depression; my mood improved within a few days of stopping it. Haven't been on any BC since. The mini pill is very effective when taken at the same time everyday (I had an alarm set on my phone), while following ecological breastfeeding, and before PPAF. After that, though, it's effectiveness drops.

Yeah, and the sucky part was that I have already had my PPAF. 6 weeks! Terrible! And I feel like I'm BFing all the time! :(

Have you had another one? It might not have been PPAF. I had secondary bleeding with both of my babies. 6 weeks with my first (PPAF didn't show until 17 months) and 8 weeks with my second (PPAF at 16 months). Both times it was just like a period in flow and length except that it didn't happen again for over a year each time. I freaked out with my first since we were BFing around the clock, but when it happened with my second I knew not to worry about it.
