nursing an older baby

Postby jessm » Mon Oct 01, 2012 9:26 am

I have to say, the way the nursing relationship has changed is a little disappointing. I don't want to say I'm hurt, but I am sad by the way it has changed. He still loves his boob don't get me wrong, but unless he's really tired or hungry, its not this bonding, wonderful experience. Its more like being a jungle gym who's nipples are thought to be made of some stretch material as he stays latched on and looks around. He also constantly unlatches to look at something or try to get something. I'm not giving it up or anything, its just not what it was.

Yep. Thats partly why i ALWAYS nursed Abby in her quiet room with no one else around and no other stimuli, she was SO distracted.

I know what you mean! Around 6 months we started more of a "schedule" where I nursed every 2 1/2 - 3 hours. I kept on that for a while. Around 9 - 9 1/2 (same age as your son), it got pretty hard. I still nursed 2 - 3 times at night but during the day, I had to go to a dim quiet room and sometimes he wasn't interested. He would just roll around and pull off and seem like he was fascinated with everything else but settling down to nurse. We finally ended up dropping a feeding right around then. That made him more interested when we actually did nurse because he was hungrier.

Good idea. I have found if I give him a small toy it helps.

I had this, around the same age, but in our case it turned out to be just another phase and soon after DD was as keen as ever, and has remained it, with the odd further phase in between just to keep me on my toes. Wearing brightly coloured beads round my neck while bfing worked well for us, as did, as you've been doing, giving her something small and interesting to hold.

That age until a little after one is pretty hard because they are learning SO MUCH SO FAST. I did like the others suggested and went to a quiet room if at all possible. If you nurse into toddlerhood, it does get better again (with a little crazy drive-by nursing thrown in!). But the older baby stage can be frustrating.

Congrats on the 1st tooth :) DS was getting teeth left and right around 8 - 10 months old, which contributed to his fussy nursing and night wakings. He got his first tooth at 5 mos though 8O

Tell me about it I am @ 3.5 years with my DD and its only here and there once in while and when she does she is interested in everything else but me lol. But I will take it while it lasts, baby #2 is on the way so I am excited to rekindle the same kind of relationship with our baby coming up. GEEZ lol if I EBF as long as I did with my DD it will mean these BBS will have lactated for 7 years total!!! Holy crap!
