My Child Beats Me...

Postby DueInMayMamma » Wed Oct 17, 2012 5:24 pm

Okay, so the title is a little bit dramatic  but DD is 5 months old and her new "trick" is that she has learned to flap her arms. Way to go for mastering motor skills, but my chest is taking a beating! Her night time feeding has turned into her being tired and frustrated and flapping all around until I have to pin her arm down with my hand! When should I start trying to "teach" her that this behavior isn't acceptable? I know she has zero concept of what she's doing at this point, but I don't want it becoming habit. Ideas?

I realize that your DD might be too old to swaddle, but what you could do is use a Sleep Sack Swaddle with the arms out for bedtime, and then when it's feeding time you can swaddle the arms just to keep her still. Or just use a receiving blanket when you pick her up and wrap her up in it. Our DD isn't quite 2 months old and I keep her swaddled for night feedings--she eats very well because she's not wiggling around and goes right back to sleep. How are daytimes going?

I was going to say the same.. Swaddling just for feeds might help. My DD is only 6 weeks old, but she tends to flail and her arms go everywhere. At night, sometimes keeping her swaddled helps keep her sleepy and calm.

I would say the only thing to do is swaddle. I hate to tell you this, but it only gets more challenging. DS grabs my lips, flicks my other nipple and tries to pop off and play with my boobs. He's his father's son alright.

In all seriousness, if he hurts me, I say in a firm voice "no, that hurts mommy" and unlatch him for a minute. Then when he's calmed down a little I let him nurse again.

Does she have a lovey? Around that age my daughter went through a period where she would rip out her hair and/or swat the crap out of me. I started nursing her while allowing her to hold onto her blanket and it got toooons better. She actually just started smacking me again at 18-months, but she's old enough that I can end the session and say "that hurts mommy".

My son did the wiggle and whacking thing... try giving her a toy to hold or something? When my son graduated to biting down on my nipple hard (he got teeth at 5 months) and then smiling (and I got a terrible sore bleeding bite mark) I had to put my foot down. Unlatching for a minute did no good. So the next time he did it, I flicked him on the cheek just enough to get the message across and said "Don't bite mommy," firmly. It worked. He really did n't do it again.

The swaddling has helped SO SO SO much!! Not only does she not whack me, she goes to sleep faster. Also giving her a blanket or toy for day feedings has helped too. I was worried she'd hit me with those as well, but she's super content just looking at them while she nurses. I'm so happy I've made it this far...only a week and a half until our 6 month mark!

Soooo happy for you--both that the swaddling helps and that you're coming up on 6 mos! Congratulations!
