13 months with DS total of 29 months

Postby 27jillfinallypreggo » Mon Oct 22, 2012 8:52 pm

Just wanted to say that I have now bf DS for 13 months, with the 16 1/2 months I went with DD (only stopping b/c I was pregnant and tired and just physically couldn't handle it any more) so that's a 29 months total for me!! I'm only having 2 and for some reason want to get to 3 years of total breastfeeding, so maybe I can get to 21 months with DS. We are down to morning, night, and naps on weekends but he still is loving it and it has gotten so easy at this point (especially with no pumping at work which I did for the full year!).

Way to go! I am not sure I'm going to BF quite that long, but we'll see! Question for you--very serious here, not trying to be sassy or disrespectful. What DO you do about teeth? I know I'll continue to BF once teeth start coming in (obviously, first teeth come in early :P ), but how can I make things work with a full set if I decide to go longer than 12 mos.?

Congratulations! That is awesome! Good luck on your 3-year goal. :)

I'm gonna jump in on the teeth thing. Honestly, it's the first top teeth that are the trouble makers for most breastfeeding moms. The bottom two typically come in first and the tongue covers those. The only time they are a problem is when the baby is about done nursing anyway, so if you can unlatch when you notice baby slowing, that's the best way to avoid biting with the first teeth. The top ones are a different story, though. They can definitely bite with those while nursing (and both of mine have). They also have to learn to readjust their latch when those top ones come in, and that can cause some rubbing and discomfort while the two of you figure out the new latch/positioning. Nipping biting in the bud with those first teeth, though, seems to be the best way to avoid trouble when more teeth start coming in. I pulled them into the breast until they let go and yelled "NO!" to startle them. It only took a few times for both of mine and they stopped biting entirely. You can usually catch them before they bite, too, since they will stop sucking first. The only real wound I've had is when both my daughter and I were sleeping and she bit me in her sleep. I obviously didn't know she was done since I was sleeping and I don't think she meant to bite as hard as she did because I'm pretty sure she was asleep, too. But once I've gotten my two trained to not bite with those top ones, the rest of the teeth hasn't even been a problem. DS had a full mouth when he weaned at 22 months and DD has 16 now at almost 19 months. I haven't been bitten in probably close to a year, if not longer. I think the idea of teeth is scarier than the actual teeth.

DD didn't get teeth until like 14 months and it wasn't a problem. DS got teeth early like 5 months. There have been a few mild bites followed by a firm no that hurts momma and it hasn't happened since. The worst is when the front teeth are coming in and are just very small because sometimes they rub, but I just readjusted the latch and it was fine. Its something I worried about and found out it wasn't that big of a deal.

Oh, good! I am relieved to hear all of that! Thanks for all the great info--I am feeling much better about it! You're right, stefanie--the idea is probably way scarier than the reality!
