Refusing to Nurse

Postby Christina0509 » Tue Oct 30, 2012 6:03 pm

Im hoping someone has some advice for me. My DS is 3 months old and started out being EBF, then I got mastitis the first time, went on meds and my supply just dwindled like crazy. So I had to start supp with formula...then I started increasing BF again, only to have the mastitis return two more times. Anyways he is now EFF...as I have been really nervouse to get mastitis yet again. to be honest Ive been lazy with it its nice to get help with bottles...however Im ready to start trying again.

I started pumping like crazy as I didnt really have much milk anymore...and then I heard it was better to have him nurse than to pump so I put him on, but he is absolutely refusing to nurse. He wont even latch on to try nursing. Anyone know how I can get him to be interested again? Is it just going to be a rough time of his screaming until he gives in? Im just not sure what to expect.

Thanks

Have you tried putting some formula on your nipple to get him interested? I don't have any experience in this, but I have heard that some women have success with doing that.

No I havent...but I will try that! I thought it more had to do with him liking the nipple on the bottle and not mine....didnt think about him being so used to the taste and smell of the formula. Thanks...will let you know how it goes.

If it is the nipple on the bottle he is preferring, you could always try using a nipple shield too, so he'll have the same rubber feeling.

this is how I got DS to start latching again in the beginning, only I used pumped milk. I would drip it on with an eye dropper until he had a good latch.
