nipple shield

Postby Sgtfish129 » Thu Jan 24, 2013 7:17 am

I have been EBF for 6 weeks now...and in the beginning it was very discouraging. My nipples were extremely sore, and my son's latch was horrible! I got to a point where I was sweating every time he nursed because it was so painful! I have resorted to a nipple shield, which has truly been my saving grace. I don't know how long I would have lasted breastfeeding without it. My question is, has anyone used a nipple shield for a long amount of time and been fine with their supply? So far I haven't had an issue and I have been using the shield for about 3 weeks now...but I'm curious to see what other experiences were/are like if you are using one. Of course I want to get him to just latch on properly...but every time I take it off to try again he kills my nipple. Plus, he sucks soooooooooooooooooooooo hard!!

I know people who have. As long as baby is emptying the breast your supply will be okay. It's all about supply and demand.

Yes! Me! I had the exact same experience as you. The pain was just awful and it got to the point where I was crying at each and every feeding. The nipple shield was my saving grace too. Some women told me that it would screw with things but I found it was just the opposite. I used them for a long time (like 8 weeks maybe?). One day I just started trying it without the shields and I noticed it didn't hurt as bad. Then I slowly started just nursing without them at all. My baby is now a year and still going strong (very strong actually) and my supply is still great. Good luck to you!

I used one with my son for a few months. It didn't affect my supply. If it's working, keep at it! GL!

used my shield with DD until she was 17 weeks old. No supply issues or anything. and by the time I stopped using it her mouth was finally big enough and it didn't hurt to nurse anymore. Good luck mama.
