Stinging Nipples

Postby MaybeLater » Sun Jan 27, 2013 8:40 pm

Nursing itself doesn't hurt at all but my nipples sting a little afterwards. Usually until baby's next feed. I really really hope this isn't thrush. I don't seem to have any other sxs and neither does ds. Is this normal or the start of thrush?

Hi Shan!!!

Sounds normal. A lot of people use lanolin on their nipples between feeds (you don't have to wipe it off before baby eats), but it didn't help me. What worked for me was putting a bit of dried breast milk on my nipples, and letting them air dry. The stinging feeling should go away within 2-3 weeks after birth. I'd check with your doctor just to make sure, and keep an eye out for white patches in your little man's mouth.

I had this the first few weeks of nursing. I think it's just getting used to having someone constantly sucking on your nipples! I agree with everyone--lanolin was a lifesaver! :)

Mine did that and they were just really dry. What helped the most was after nursing, putting some breastmilk on them, and letting them air dry, then putting lanolin on them. Worked like a charm. :)
