second time around-- question

Postby BeccaM » Tue Mar 26, 2013 7:51 am

Hi ladies,

I just had my second son 3 days ago, and he's nursing like a champ! (I also breastfed my now 2 1/2 year old for 16 mos). My milk started coming in when LO was about 48 hrs old.I can hear him gulping and swallowing now, so I know he is getting milk. But I am wondering... I am not getting engorged this time, and not leaking at all?! Last time I had a lot of leaking issues and some engorgement when my milk came in. Is this normal the second time around? Will it happen later on? Granted, this LO nurses more aggressively and more often than my first baby did initially, so maybe that is part of it. I just find it weird that I had random letdowns, leaking and engorgement issues last time and now nothing. In a way, it's really nice! Just want to make sure I have enough milk!

Congratulations on your home birth! :D

I don't know anything about the second time around versus the first, but I can assure you that things are probably fine. I've only had one baby, but I never had any engorgement problems and never leaked (I was surprised that I never had to use pads in my bra!). I knew she was getting plenty of milk due to her diapers and weight gain. :D

I am studying to be a breastfeeding counselor, but don't have a second baby yet.

It is normal not to get engorged the second time around. It is also normal to never get engorged, I didn't with my first. Don't worry about it and enjoy it :)

I didn't get engorged at all the second time around when my milk came in, and barely leaked. Your body has a better idea of what it's doing now as opposed to the first time. It's totally normal!

Thanks for the reassurance! My milk seems to be continuing to increase and while I never got engorged, I have had a small amount of leaking. So I feel better about it, LOL I think I have plenty of milk!
