when to introduce a bottle???

Postby jennellis » Fri May 31, 2013 3:22 pm

I have to go back to work when my LO is 13 weeks old. When do you recommmend introducing a bottle so that it wont mess her nursing up or cause her to refuse the bottle

I personally plan to introduce between 4 and 6 weeks with this baby. I'm a SAHM, but introduced my first at 6 weeks and he had no problems at all. I waited until 8 weeks with my daughter, though, and she never ended up accepting one. It was fine, but it meant no date nights for many months!

You may have to try several different bottles and/or nipples to find the one she'll like. Or she might be super easy, like my son, and take any bottle you happen to give her.

I think we introduced a bottle around 4 or 5 weeks? It took a while to find the right bottle that worked for him, and we really didn't get that sorted out completely until he was in daycare. He started daycare at 10 weeks, and would take his bottles, but it wasn't an easy process. Once we switched to the medium flow nipples on the Playtex Nursers, all was well! My milk comes out too fast and so the slow nipple on the bottle was just pissing him off :)

We introduced the bottle around 2 weeks. I know they say to wait, but all I heard from my working mom friends was introduce early because they waited and their LOs never took bottles well. Anyway, DD did well for about a week, then decided she hated the bottle. She still nurses amazingly, even with solid foods, but is still pretty iffy on the bottle. She just prefers Momma, I guess! Works just fine for me!

I don't have personal experience, but a lot of the recommendations I've gotten was to wait 4-6 weeks to be sure breastfeeding is well established before introducing new.
Recently had our first child and have been married since October 6, 2006. I'm 27 and DH 29.

We introduced a bottle around 3 weeks of age, and DD took one fine with no issues until age 2.5 months. She flat out refused a bottle until about 5 months, which is when I introduced a sippy cup. She never did take a bottle again, so she has her BM in a sippy.

I guess what I'm saying is every baby is different, and not to stress too much about it. A baby can go without eating until they are with you again, and then they'll want to nurse nurse nurse! Hopefully yours isn't as stubborn. ;)

We breastfeed nearly exclusively. I just introduced a bottle to this LO (my second) to give him probiotics mixed with BM, since he was gassy early on. I think I introduced the bottle around 4 weeks, and he did fine with it. He lately has been looking askance at the bottle, though, and prefers to BF. He is getting more of an opinion about it :D I don't mind much since I am SAHM and nothing depends on him really taking the bottle just fine. But he was nursing so great, with a strong suck, at 4 weeks, that I felt fine introducing the bottle.I would have waited a few weeks longer, had he had more trouble BFing.

Oh, and I just want to clarify--even though we introduced a bottle at 2 weeks DD was an awesome BFer. The nurse who came to help me in the hospital said it was very rare that a baby latches as well as she did that quickly, so she was fantastic from the start. I'd have waited a little longer too if there had been any issues!

Lorelai was also an good BFer...still is! I realize my pp makes it sound like she only takes BM in a sippy--I meant when we are apart. When we're together, the kid is a booby monster, lol! :)

We introduced a bottle at 3 weeks and did one a few times a week for a couple weeks, got complacent and stopped (I hate pumping and am a SAHM). Now DD freaks out if I'm not there to feed her. It's not a big deal during the day, when we can easily plan things around it and include solid meals in the interim, but I've been gone for two bedtimes and they were a disaster. We will do bottles more regularly when we have another child.

Just to clarify, LO received ONLY BM, not any formula. He nurses exclusively except for the occasional bottle to receive his probiotics :)
