Positive OPK while breastfeeding?

Postby unaffected » Tue Jun 04, 2013 5:14 pm

I got what looks to be a positive (or close to positive) OPK tonight. Does this even mean anything? Could I ovulate? I'm still nursing my 5 month old, no signs of weaning in our near future (last night he woke 3x to nurse!).

Any insight or opinions?

You can totally still ovulate while BFing. I got AF back despite BFing on demand around the clock 7 weeks PP. Yuck! And of course you've heard all the stories of women who have kids less than a year apart because they thought they were safe while BFing! :P If you are hoping to prevent, I'd use some kind of BC like condoms or minipill. Also I have the Nexplanon implant which is the same as the minipill only a continuous dose so you don't have to worry about taking it within 5 minutes of the same time each day. If you're not trying to prevent, I'd get busy! ;)

Have you taken any opks prior to these ones? Depending on the person, your hormones can be all over the place while breastfeeding, which can cause positive, or near positive, opks randomly. If you take them consistently and notice you normally get a negative and then suddenly it's positive you could definitely be ovulating. There is such a huge range of normal when it comes to when you'll get your ppaf, and its definitely possible to o before then.

Kelli - Thanks for the compliment on Henry!! We are definitely NOT trying to prevent! It would be a miracle if we got pregnant naturally, but I always hear stories about people who did IVF then had a natural pregnancy... hoping to be one of those urban legends!

Stefanie - I have been taking OPKs for about two weeks, off and on. I had some O symptoms a while back, which prompted me to start testing. This is the first time it's been positive. I am on my 3rd day of EWCM, so it seems likely that I *could* ovulate.

Yes. You can ovulate and if that is a true ovulation your first PPAF is probably on it's way!

Just wanting to say good luck Kara! I hope you get to become one of the lucky people :)

My first ppaf came back at 6 1/2 months pp and I was EBF until 5 1/2 months when we started with a little solids :)

My 1st PPAF came back with my first son at 3 1/2 months PP. Which meant I O'd around 3 months PP (I had surprisingly started temp tracking a week or two before O and was quite surprised to see fertile signs and a temp shift that soon :/) I had been nursing on demand, but he had started sleeping pretty long stretches at night. My cycles were long and irregular for several months after that.

My second LO is almost 12 weeks old and no signs of O yet. I have been temp charting for the past few weeks in case. He is also sleeping 6 - 7 hour straight at night now. So I don't know what to expect, but my midwife said if it happened with the first it's likely to come back early with subsequent pregnancies.

First off hi!!! I really miss seeing familiar people on here. Good job on keeping the breastfeeding going. I have absolutely no knowledge on the opks while breastfeeding but like the others said you could be about to ovulate. I got the mirena about 4 months pp and it made my cycle come back I guess. Booooo!!!! Really I just wanted to say from one of those after ivf "oops" but huge blessing mommas I hope it happens for you the same way!!!

Thanks for all the feedback, ladies!

Based on my OPKs (2 days of +) and fertile CM, it appears that I did ovulate. AF arrived on 6dpo (boo!), so that was a bust! I figure my body will take a while to get back to normal. Today is CD10, so it will be interesting to see when/if I ovulate again!

Thanks again for all the support :)

BFing can affect the length of your LP, so I wouldn't worry too much about that :)

My LPs have always been really short when BFing. The more cycles you get, the more regular it will get.

I agree, your lp should lengthen as your cycles progress. How do you feel about getting ppaf already?
