Am I filling her up?

Postby Emandbeau » Wed Jul 10, 2013 2:15 pm

My 16 day old baby girl has been increasingly eating more. I usually only empty one breast but now that doesn't seem to be enough so I offer her both and she still cries. I unlatch her and squeeze my breast and barley get any milk out. How do I know she is getting enough???

Is she wetting and pooping frequently? That's the best way to tell. Baby eats more frequently to tell your boobs to make more milk. It doesn't mean she's starving. Keep doing what you're doing!

Wet and dirty diapers and weight gain are the best indicators of adequate milk production. It is normal for babies to cry and fuss a lot. It's just what they do unfortunately!

We def have wet and dirty diapers and weight gain! Maybe it was a small growth spirt. Not fun right now bc I have a split nipple with a clogged duct in the split

Oh dear! Well for the duct it will be helpful to use heat and massage along with nursing and pumping plenty. If nursing is too painful on that side you can pump until it heals.

Oh, ouch on the cut and clogged duct. I agree with Jess on what to do...hopefully it heals quickly! As for your baby, it sounds totally normal. They hit a big growth spurt around 2-3 weeks and are insatiable. My daughter seemed to be in a growth spurt from about 2 weeks to 3 months, and as exhausting as it was, it does pass quickly. Just trust your body and nurse, nurse, nurse.

How's it going now? Baby needing both sides doesn't strike me as strange, my 10 month old still whines if she doesn't get both sides :lol4:
