Green poo...help!

Postby JackiP » Mon Jul 29, 2013 12:05 pm

Since breastfeeding my little girl has had the typical mustard seedy poo's. but for the last few days shes had a few green poos, I'd say for every 4-5 yellow ones she'll have a 1-2 green ones.

I've read this can be too much fore milk and not enough hind milk so I've been keeping it to one breast per feed. Sometimes her feeds last 10 mins some times 30-45 mins.

She has gained 8oz's in the last week so they are happy with her gain. She's now 7lb 15oz's and her birthweight was just under 7lb 4oz. She's 18 days old.

Can these green poo's be normal? Behaviour is no different. She seems a little snuffly today but its not affecting feeding or sleeping?

Should I be worried? Really enjoying breastfeeding (ff DD1) and I'm happy with her weight gain but worried about the green poo? Any advice?

Thanks so much for reading x

If she's happy, gaining weight, and having mostly yellow bms, it's probably fine. I think the foremilk/hindmilk issue is only when the green poos are also frothy and sometimes have blood. I would probably feed normally, off one side first and then offer the second, too. Both of my kiddos had the occasional green poo and it was no biggie. It could even be something you are eating (if you pump, you might notice your milk sometimes has a blue or green tint to it-totally normal!). If it happens a lot, she could could be having a sensitivity to what you are eating (dairy tends to be a big culprit), but since she isn't acting fussy I doubt that's what's going on.

I agree with the pp, I wouldn't worry as long as she is gaining properly and seems happy. My DD got nasty green poops when I ate hummus!

If it becomes a problem then I'd consider block feeding. I actually did have to block feed DD because it became such an issue for us and also with the reflux.
A green poo every now and then isn't going to hurt them.

My first son had this off and on the first few months, it never seemed to be too much of an issue for him. As long as she doesn't seem uncomfortable and is gaining weight normally, she's probably fine!
