Did you take a breastfeeding class?

Postby same_true_taurus » Thu Nov 14, 2013 3:25 pm

I'm getting frustrated because it's hard to find a class in my area. The hospital offers one but it's done for 2013. It's 3 separate 1 hour classes. Did you benefit more from a class? Or could I research on my own and then have nurses help more when baby is born?
I'm just feeling really discouraged at this point.

Hey,
when I had my first son 9 years ago I went through the chilbirth prep classes and I did take a Bfeeding class too. It was informational but I think that maybe your local lactation consultant/specialist could help you just as much if you can't get into a class before your baby comes. Hopefully you have one of those in your area. After my first son was born I was in the hospital for about a week recovering from my csection and a bad cold, so the nurses there were very helpful. The nurse that helped me the most had 6 kids and had nursed all of them, so she knew her stuff. :-) Keep your chin up and stay positive. Just remember that sometimes the first week or so trying to get the hang of bfeeding can be challenging but it is so worth it if you just push through it. It will get easier. Good luck to you dear and congrats on your lil one. God Bless!!

I didn't take any classes, and gave birth on a holiday weekend so the LC was off. The nurses were helpful with positioning, and I had a baby that was a hungry natural once my milk came in (she could not have cared less about colostrum). I think I had the easiest possible road to BFing though- it was normalized for me growing up, I was confident and really didn't give it much thought, and I had a full term baby who latched well and ate efficiently and frequently.

I don't think classes hurt, but I don't think you are destined to fail without them, kwim? I obviously can't speak from experience on what they teach in the classes, but I imagine that as far as practical purposes are concerned, hiring an LC for the first few days would be well worth it if you are worried.

Don't feel discouraged! Baby isn't even here yet. BFing is very natural, and all you can do is give it a shot. You might surprise yourself :D

Thanks so much for the advice and words of encouragement. Deep down I know that the hospital staff is very supportive and does have an LC...so the help will be there whether I take classes or not.
I'm really a control freak. And I've had it stuck in my head that I NEED those classes lol.
Either way I'm going to try to have more confidence in myself, that I'll be fine and baby and I are learning together :-)

I did take a breastfeeding class, although I think I learned more on my own and from talking with the LC. It just made me feel more secure to take the class. Same thing with our birthing class...I didn't learn anything useful and had to have a c-section anyway.

Also look into some books: The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding is a good one, and so is The Nursing Mother's Companion.

Best of luck to you! :)

Do you have a local La Leche League? They may be a good group to touch base with for classes and on-going support.

I didn't go to any class but had taken few suggestions from my mom and relatives, got some tips and suggestions from reading the articles and few by talking with the LC. Finally I have done with breastfeeding my baby successfully without any issues :) . I don't think classes are necessary 8)
