What detergent do you use?

Postby dizzymariposa2 » Wed Jul 29, 2009 8:46 pm

So sorry that I'm asking a redundant question, but I'm wondering what you use to wash your dipes :)

I know, I'm bad. I first started washing with Arm&Hammer sensitive skin because the only thing in it was an optical brightener, and since I had it on hand and didnt use it for anything else, I used it. I don't have any kind of buildup, but I want to switch to a more cloth friendly detergent.

I was thinking about charlie's soap, mostly because if I ever needed to run out for it in an emergency a local cloth retailer sells it. That and I'm not sure what else to use  I've heard that charlie's soap causes burns and rashes, not sure why though. DD doesn't have sensitive skin, but I'm expecting a newborn and that concerns me!

Thanks a bunch mamas.

eta: how about country save and planet?

charlies soap. i love it. we don't use anything else for our laundry. it's pretty rare that you'd have the burn rashes from it. my family has very sensitive skin and we've done very well with it.

I hated Charlies Soap!!!! Caused horrible stinkies for us! Also many sites quit recommending it due to so many moms saying it burned their babies. It never burned Ethan but I didnt use it very long either. I have tried so many soaps, Country Save, Planet, Tide, Tide Free, Purex Free, Arm and Hammer Free, Mrs. Meyers etc. Can you tell I havent really found a great choice? Right now Im using Crunchy Clean and it doesnt seem to get the diapers so clean so Im using a Tbs. in the cold rinse and 1Tbs Crunchy Clean and 1Tbs Planet Powder in the hot wash and 1 cap Calgon water softener. Its working good for now :) We have horrible hard water and it causes so much problems diaper wise.

I started with Purex F&C and hated it - it made WAY too many suds - I've heard it can cause buildup.

Then I switched to Planet and I'm still using it. It's been working fine so far - but I have soft water and a top loader. I've used samples of Country Save here and there and I like it too but I can't find it locally and I really don't like ordering a huge box from Amazon. I like buying in local stores instead, so I'm sticking with Planet.

I've also tried Mountain Green and it worked fine but it was also a little sudsy, so I had to do extra rinses.

I've never tried Charlie's Soap but I've heard too many times of people complaining of stinkies when using it, so I don't feel tempted.

Wow Rebecca! if that were my wash routine I think I'd lose my head!

Ohhh. And I forgot to ask about Ecover.. which one is it? could someone post a photo of the one that we're supposed to use from the internet? The fabric softener one, Blue mentioned it :) I looked up ecover on amazon and got about 15 different things!

Any idea why charlies causes stinkies? is it the bacteria or the buildup?

Started off using Tide F&C which we use for our regular laundry but recently got a box of regular powder Tide and it seems to be doing fine with the diaps. They always smell great, doesn't seem to get stinky as before with the microfibre. I almost always add some Calgon to the wash load as well for our hard water.

I've been using All F&C since starting CD (Jan 09). It's been working great up until a few months ago when I started getting stinkies. I use mostly pockets with microfiber inserts, so now I strip every month or so and have no problems. The last three or four washes, I've washed once with All F&C (with extra rinse), then another complete cycle with a very small amount of Tide Coldwater. My diapers smell better than ever!

I started out using Planet, which worked perfectly fine for us. Now, I use Country Save, pretty much for the fact that it was cheaper than Planet on Amazon. You can get a case of detergent for cheap on there, and if you sign up for the subscription, you get an extra 15% off, and can then cancel it after you have your detergent...the longest you can go between deliveries is 6 months, and we were scheduled to have our 2nd in the 2nd week of September, but I just opened my 2nd box (of 4) a couple weeks go, it's not even half gone, and we use it for all our laundry!! It's a pretty good deal. :D

I started out using All F&C, then realized it wasn't as cloth friendly, so I tried Country Save. It was working well, but I switched to Charlie's because it was a tad cheaper and I found a bag on DS for a good price. Then, I started getting stinkies, so I switched back to CS, and that's where I'll probably stay. I use it on all my laundry now. I did the same thing as MrsLewis. Get a case at a time and saved more by doing auto shipment. I just got a new case in June, and I still had one box left, so it is a great deal.

we started off using charlies but then the stinkies came. Then we switched to purex f&c .... more stinkies. Then we used simply clean, it worked pretty good for us actually but i hate having to order detergent onine. We are using tide right now (DH is obsessed with the smell) I might consider buying simply clean again only because tide can be so expensive, but we did buy a 38 load bottle for 5 dollars the other day

In tx, I had hard water. I used CS with Calgon and Ecover softener. Here I dont have much CS so I alternate with Tide, which is sudsy but ok.

Ive used simply clean too, which I mixed with CS. My friend SAvannah on DS sent me her huge bag of i think it crunchy clean, so we'll see how that works when I get back to my stuff.
