Pink in diaper?

Postby rleash » Sat Apr 16, 2011 6:31 pm

For the past week, my diapers have been turning pink when wet. It may only be when he poops ( he's 7 weeks old, so it's obviously really wet poop). What is going on? Is it too much detergent? Do I need to be worried that something is wrong with him? This has happened in my cotton prefolds as well as my bamboo fitteds. Help!

I have never heard of a thing...is it only where his wet poop touches? Or does it do it when they are wet from washing too? If it's just when he goes...I'd almost be inclined to ask the doctor...cause I don't know what else it could be! Hopefully someone else will chime in with some suggestions for you.

Hmmm... that seems odd. I would check with your pedi. The only time I've noticed pink residue is when they're on solids and ate something that came out reddish/orange. Maybe your LO has a UTI?

We've had our microfiber inserts turn pink when DD pees. I chalked it up to some teething strips that were cherry flavored (they were red/pink) b/c it stopped after I quit giving her the strips.
Maybe it was something else? *head scratch*

I thought of the UTI too, and I've also read about "brick dust" where the urea crystallizes and causes a reaction with the fabric if it's too concentrated (meaning baby's dehydrated). But I don't think either of those are the case because it's always in the far back of the diaper, where he poops (but it doesn't seem like it's IN the poop.. just where the moisture sort of wicked to).

And he's EBF.. and I can't say I've been eating anything weird. I have been using CJs butter on him, but I haven't heard of anyone else having a coloring problem with it.

It hasn't happened now since last Saturday, so I guess the problem resolved itself. It did seem like he was having a growth spurt when this was happening (I never know for sure because with both of my kids it seems like they'd have symptoms of a growth spurt every other week).

His 2 month checkup is Monday, so I'll still ask the pedi about it, too. Thanks for the suggestions.. I'll KUP!

I wouldnt think it would be brick dust - we had that, but I thought it usually happened in the first few weeks. Maybe blood from the poo from your nipples bleeding. I have heard of that before.
