Night time diaper question

Postby BrandyJ. » Fri Apr 22, 2011 5:21 am

We always use sposies at night. My husband put my son to bed last night without changing his diaper. (that's whole other issue) but he didn't leak!!!! I might actually try it again tonight. But, since he had his diaper on for 12 straight hours!! It smelled horribly of ammonia. Is this normal or do I have stinkies?? It's very frustrating because my dipes are practically brand new and I feel like I have stinkies already.

Any thoughts?

Btw, the diaper was a pocket "preston's pants" and only had one little soaker in it.

I think the smell was probably normal for that amount of time. If you are getting that horrid smell after say, one pee, then you may have issues.

Yup..

i had brand new diapers that reeked of ammonia after a nights pee. I was floored the first time we did it. It is just the amount of time and pee that it is.

We do doubled prefolds at night. He goes 11 - 12 hrs, no leaks. We do have a soggy stinky diaper in the morning, though! I think it's normal.

Totally normal. My dude goes 12 hours overnight and in the AM...peeeee uuuuuuu. :D I have used Preston's Pants overnight...but stuffed with a pf and a doubler. My best nighttime combo is a pf with doubler, fleece on top in a bummis cover. NEVER leaks.

I don't know ladies. My son will go 12 hours through the night without a change and not have a stinky. When I had a build up though his dipes were stinky.

What kind of detergent are ya'll using?

The smell is probably normal, especially as your little guy is getting older. As they get older, the pee just stinks more. You could do a stripping wash with Dawn to make sure you don't have the stinkies, but I remember that my DD's night dipes usually had that same smell.

For overnight dipes you could try:
**SBish (I think they may have a night diaper); if not just use the bamboo with all of the inserts and lay another insert on the outside of the diaper

**Very Baby Basic Nights

**Baby Behinds -- depending on how big he is, this could be a good solution. These are sold as a OS, but they are really more like a medium.

**I've also used a super-stuffed Mother Ease One-Size diaper for over-nights, especially as she grew and I was trying to avoid buying more diapers as we were approaching PLing.

Good luck!

Yay for a night time cloth success.

Yes, I think the overnight diaper tends to smell pretty strong in the mornings... just like a LOT of pee! Mine always washes clean though.

I get stinkies about once a month from the MF inserts. What I end up doing is washing JUST the inserts and the hemp I use with a little bleach added to the normal wash cycle, then adding an extra rinse at the end if there is any smell left from the bleach. It usually gets rid of whatever is causing the ammonia stink. I try to strip completely once a month, to avoid the problem, but it doesn't seem to matter sometimes!

Thanks girls!! I'm wondering if I didn't strip/prep the new diapers enough in the beginning?? However, I was told microfkeece doesn't need stripping, but fuzzibuns instructions say to wash in hot water with detergent 5 times before wearing. I did put 2 capfuls of bleach in a frontloader washing machine. It's helped. I appreciate your thoughts and advice,,
