Ammonia problem?

Postby Emmo » Thu May 26, 2011 6:03 pm

I'm just now thinking about cloth diapering and looking at pros and cons. Someone I know told me that she heard they get a big ammonia problem that you can't wash out and it causes rashes... ? what are your opinions?

If you don't wash your diapers frequently enough that can cause ammonia build up. If you use detergent with additives that can cause the diapers to hold on to it and not wash it all away. But in general, no I don't have that issue. I wash every 2-3 days.

I wash every three days. I have in the past put a tiny bit of bleach in my wash load every so often and then double rinsed with vinegar to make sure it rinsed out, but recently I found that soaking the diapers in cold water and lots of baking soda works well for getting rid of ammonia odors. And it's easier on the diapers and on baby's bum.
