best prefolds for newborns?

Postby aimsy » Sat Jul 09, 2011 7:46 am

Hey ladies,

I have quite the newborn stash already, but I think it would be nice to have some prefolds. I love using them on my older baby, but when I tried using them on her and her sis when they were newborns, they always seemed too bulky! (And I'm all about a fluffy butt, don't get me wrong ... we've used cloth since my DD1 was a month old.)

ANYWAY! Right now I am using the Econobum prefolds on my DD2. The "newborn" ones I have are infant-sized indian prefolds that I bought from Jillians Drawers about 4 years ago.

Is there something better out there for newborns, that won't be as bulky?? GMDs? Or do I need to get x-smalls or something?

Oh, I don't make very small babies, either. DD1 was 8lb 1oz, and DD2 was 9 lb, 2oz.

Thanks!

I loved the GMD prefolds. They fit DD until about 11 lbs, and they weren't too bulky on her.

Orange edge GMD's fit C until about 12 LBS. I didn't fund them bulky at all.

Sorry--orange edge (newborn). She's been in the yellow edge for awhile now, but I really need to order the next size soon so I have them on hand when she's ready.

GMD orange edge NB prefolds. But I had a 8.2 lb baby who put on 2 lbs right away and the orange ones only lasted a few weeks. I almost wish, in his case, that we had started with the smalls right away. But they have been worth the investment now, because I double up with the bigger ones for nighttime now (we still do PFs only).

I am totally not even pg again yet  Just wondering how long newborn (orange gmd) would fit pinned.... I hate snappis and prefer pins for fit and trimness. I can still pin a GMD organic Yellow on my 16 mo DD, though the rise of the Red is better. Was 12 lbs the limit snappied or pinned and was there still rise left to grow when they were outgrown snappied?

I really liked the Imagine Organic prefolds from Nickisdiapers. They are sized very simialarly to GMD, were so soft and very affordable in comparison to GMD. I have read that small flats can be a trimmer option for newborns.

Becca, I am so impressed by your PFs only dedication! I am trying to improve my technique and love for them. I would like to break my expensive fitteds addiction before baby #2 comes, but I can't stand poopsplosions on my woolies!

Thanks Becca for the input! My babies tend to be on the little bit bigger side, too. (8lb 1oz and 9lb 2oz.)

I used to think people who liked only PFs were crazy ... but now I totally get it!! LOL! I do have some BG organics I send to babysitters, and I do have a large collection of Goodmamas, but man ... the PFs are so nice! Easy to spray off, easy to wash, no stains, easy to "fold".

I started cloth thinking I would only use pocket diapers ... lol ... now with the 3rd baby on the way, I'm thinking PFs is the easiest! Who woulda known!?

OH, and YES, I am not a huge fan of PFs with my wool, that's the only downside. And I LOVE my wool. Thankfully DD2 has more solid poo than her sister ever did. 8)

I have about 18 orange edge washed and fluffed from Claira that I won't be using this LO, I have way to many fitteds that need to be used

I also love prefolds. I have plenty of pockets and fitteds so I wouldn't need to use them, but I primarily use prefolds during the day (double stuffed AIOs at night). I'm even going to order some in the next size since I like them so much. I didn't think I'd enjoy them at all.
