My diapers smell like old musty towels

Postby BrandyJ. » Fri Jul 29, 2011 6:44 am

I've been having this issue for a while now. If I don't dry them all of the way or the sit in the washer for a few hours. I bleached them last time and it worked, but I can't do that every time. Augh

I have a front loader and maybe it's the washer???? I'm super frustrated. Help!!

Rinse
Wash tide free and clear and sometimes borax (long heavy cycle)
Extra rinse

Sometimes I repeat

They are fairly new dipes. today I added tee tree oil. I'm on my way home to check on them.

I suspect they aren't getting all the tide rinsed out, especially since you have a front loader. I'd see if you can get more water, add and extra rinse, or switch to a different detergent. You might try stripping with dawn.

I've stripped with dawn once... Bleach the second time. My washer may need more water.. It's just frustrating. I just want to wash and be done. Thanks so much for your thoughts.. I'll see what I can do.

I suggest adding a little vinegar or oxyclean to your wash. I alternate between the two.

I also have a front-loader, and I would add that because it's summer I can't let the laundry sit in the washer or it does get musty, not just CDs. Also, I leave the door open when I'm not running a load to keep the washer dried out. When drying the diapers, I put it on "extra dry" setting to dry the heck out of them, otherwise they will get the musty smell too.

I use Country Save detergent, sometimes throw in a little oxyclean too. For my cycle I do a short cold wash with no spin dry or detergent, then the long sanitize wash with detergent, and extra rinse like you.

Maybe you could try sunning them? Although it's a PITA if you don't have a laundry line (I don't :()...

I've had this problem as well...since I got an HE machine. I know it's taboo, but I've been adding about a TBSP of bleach to each wash cycle and I haven't had any problems at all. I use Charlie's Soap and do cold rinse/heavy duty hot wash with extra rinse/cold rinse. Suddenly I have the musty smell again! Thinking they need a good strip anyway (it's been about 6 weeks). Guess we'll see what happens.
