Newborn stash questions

Postby Lisa614 » Thu Mar 08, 2012 11:31 am

Hi ladies! So I'm planning my newborn stash, haven't bought anything yet, but I wanted to run my plans by you and see if I'm on the right track or if I need to get more of anything. I'm thinking we'll use mostly prefolds at the beginning, most everyone seems to like them, and it seems like they fit newborns better. We'll probably start as soon as we get home from the hospital.

Planned stash/questions:
24 newborn prefolds - too many, not enough? should I get some premies too?
6 newborn fitted
6 newborn size covers - Do I need more?
6 thirsties duo covers (LO will have to grow into these I think depending on size)

Dh says we're going to wash everyday, but I'm not sure I see that happening, should I get more for every other day washing?

Thanks so much girls! I'm so excited to CD but just a little nervous about getting everything I need.

I would get 6 more newborn fitted and be sure you have plenty to wash every other day. You will have enough to do without worrying about daily laundry. Where are you planning on buying prefolds and fitteds? I love the GMD workhorse fitteds and they are really economical ($5 each for newborn), but you do need to order enough to balance out the $7 flat rate shipping.

Take my advice for what it's worth, I am a fitted type of CD person and I only use prefolds occasionally when everything else is dirty or I am bored :D

Thanks for the reply! I'm getting my prefold from GMD, so shipping wouldn't be a problem. The workhorse for newborns looks kinda big in some of the pictures they have, did it fit for you alright? For that price I could easily try a few though. Thanks!

My NB stash was 24 infant size prefolds and 6 thirsties duo covers. I had to go the cheapest route at the time and it worked for us. They were a bulky for a little while but lasted quite a few months before needing to go up a size. I did the wash every other day. If you have fitteds thrown in the mix too that's great! Sounds like you're set. If you want to go to One Size pockets about 12lbs they should start fitting well on the smallest size.

Make sure you have a cloth friendly diaper cream because it's nice to have when you need it. I use Motherlove. Snappi's are great also for the prefolds, but my DH preferred to just lay it tri folded in the cover.

Sounds good! We had, for the early days:

24 NB prefolds (GMD)
24 Small prefolds
4 Thirsties covers, small
3 Snappis

That did fine for us for several months. I washed every 2nd or 3rd day. I kinda doubt you'll want to wash every day, but maybe you like laundry more than me

What would you suggest for a cheap way to CD a NB without prefolds?

I have 11 KL size zeros coming and 11 BG 3.0 xs/smalls. Looking at the smalls I have they appear to be the exact size the BG OS Organics are when they are snapped down. Is this true?

If they are I fear I may have gone over board on the smalls since I have so many OS from DD. My MIL will be watching the new one when I go back to work and I am afraid prefolds would overwhelm her. Plus, she did fine with the AIO's and I don't want to switch it up on her.

How long did you find it took your NB to properly fit in the OS dipes?

Looks good to me. When my son was a NB I had 24 PFs, and 9 fitteds with 6 covers. I only had to wash every 2 days and still had a back up while washing. I hand washed my covers usually though since they dried super fast.

I'd say you are good to go unless you just want more.

You can never go wrong with the kissaluvs 0. Those are workhorse diapers. I never had ONE leak out of those!! Not sure of the BG small size but I know the mediums my 29lb 20 month old son can still fit in with room to grow. I have the XS AIO BG diapers and they are more of a NB size IMO so anything much bigger may be too big for a NB.

My son didn;t fit into OS diaper well enough (without leaks) until he was about 13-14lbs.

I think you can get infant Kushies all in one's for about $10 a diaper. I've never used them though. I bought some used EcoNappi's and Kissa's for this baby to go with my prefolds.

Thanks for all of the advice girls! I decided to go with a few less covers and a few more fitteds, but I'm feeling pretty good about this stash to start out with. :D
