STUBBORN subject!!!!

Postby blue-eden » Sun May 02, 2010 11:26 am

 that would be my mum!

She asked for some photos of her in some of her costumes, so we did a practice shoot the other day.

She insisted on:
1) this location. Hello? dappled light!!! wouldn't listen to me!
2) the white and black costume, with a dull background. I wanted colour!
3) being centered. Apparently, being off center is too radical an idea.
4) no eye contact.
5) this pose. It's a classic belly dancing pose. Never mind that her bare armpit is encased in black, next to her face! LOL!

What's an obedient daughter to do?

This is the photo my mum is happiest with. I think it came out kind of ok, considering it breaks a lot of photography "rules".

What do you think? Any ideas for us for the real shoot?

OK, I'm a newbie, but hoping I have an "eye" for this...

I agree it did come out ok for the conditions. LOL at the armpit comment. How are her arms (in her opinion) without the sleeves? The sleeve does kind of draw the eye right to her armpit.

ITA with you about needing colour. Failing that, or even with the addition of colour, I'm wondering if maybe the background should be blurred out more with a lower dept of field... the rocks and things sort of blend with her top, if you know what I mean.

Hmmm, I'd have thought belly dancing would be all about colour! Although maybe she is a bit more of an earthy person (and I'm Canadian too, so I understand- if that makes any sense). I think either she or the backgound (blurred) need to be more colourful.

But very nice job in the dappled conditions.

Blue I live by all rules are made to be broken  Even though you broke the rules that one photos a good. Here's what I say on the next go around. Different location. Are there any fields near you. I think that with a wide open blue sky would bring some color to the table. Some movement would help too. That is what comes to mind when I think of bell dancers. Along with long sweeping movements of the body.

Lol I kinda like it. I mean, yeah I noticed the things you mentioned. BUT I actually like the dappled light, I think it gives some movement to the picture that totally fits with her pose. Could you maybe do a bit of a color pop in the background? Beautiful subject! :)

Thanks guys!

I don't like the sleeves, but they are part of the Tribal Costume. She does have lots of colour costumes but she wanted THIS one. And we're converting some to BW, so we thought a BW costume would work for that.

I think you're right, a wide open space would be better? Lots of fields near me, but keep in mind the Greek sun is STRONG even at 9 am and 6 pm!

Vic, I was thinking about sponging a reddish/burgundy hue into the background but wasn't sure if it would look right. Maybe I should try it?

I shot at 2.8, which is very wide open. Any wider, and the lens does get a bit of distortion and colour shift, and wouldn't do much to blur the background any further due to the distance. BUT a wider open space would blur it more, I'll look for a better locale.

Out of total random curiosity, are the pictures for advertising... or just to have?

I think it's great! The dappled light doesn't bother me a bit in this picture. As far as I can see it's only on her clothes, not her skin and nothing is blown. Rules are made to be broken and your mum is beautiful.

Thanks! I'll tell her! She just turned 57 and she belly dances and just won TWO competitions for Latin Dancing!

I think rules can be broken too, and the longer I look around at work I LOVE I realize that it's ok to be creative with light and comps, as long as it doesn't make your subject look funky or terrible (ie. bad colour casts, out of focus, limbs randomly chopped, bad white balance, etc).

This is the work of one photog I just discovered whose work is AMAZING and she breaks so many "rules".

I like this shot. Its not the way I would have wanted it done though.

I still vote for her on top of a hill with the blue sky above her.
