Should I risk it....

Postby puddingpop » Mon Jul 05, 2010 6:37 pm

Gals,
I've got a question for ya'll. I have fallen head over heels in love with the 85 mm lens from Nikon. I was peeking about on ebay for a good deal on one with an F-stop of 1.4 at least. I was shocked to see a 85 MM F/1.2 AI for dirty cheap price 8O It is listed as clean working on conditions with a small problem of a couple tiny specs of mold on the back lens :? My question is could I send it in to Nikon to be serviced (does anybody know what that cost might be) to be cleaned and calibrated? Basically should I take this risk or should I just keep looking for one with a 1.4 F stop?

Can you contact Nikon to see what they say before you make your decision?

AFAIK, Nikon's 85 mm lenses are 1.8 and 1.4. The Canon L series lens is a 1.2 though.

Can you post a link to this lens you saw?

The 85 mm 1.4 is a FABULOUS lens and well worth the extra money over the 1.8 version. There is just no comparison between the two when it comes to quality and bokeh.

Bule here is the link. I know Nikon makes some 1.2 lens. They're had to come by and pretty pricey though.

Oh I know which lens you are talking about!

No, it's not an F1.2 aperture, it's an F2 aperture. Nikon keeps SAYING it will come out with an F1.2 aperture, we're all waiting for it, but there hasn't been an announcement. I agonized over getting the 1.4, as I figured that they would announce the 1.2 the next day!

Do you read Ken Rockwell's reviews? He's usually spot on in his review. Here is his on the F2.

They are not very expensive lenses, usually around $150-250.
Here is another one on Ebay, excellent condition, for not much more than the one in your link.

Worth it to get the better condition one, because having a lens cleaned and fixed can be pricy.

Thanks Blue. I've decided to save for the yummy 1.4. Maybe by the time I've got enough saved the G(? I think that is the right one) series will come out.

ooooh do wait for the 1.4, don't get the 1.8! You'll be sooo happy you waited!

The G is just the style of ap ring it has. In essence, it doesn't have one. This is why the 50 mm 1. 4 for example doesn't work on the D60, which is a manual focusing camera. "G" stands for "gelded".
