[Tip] How to make blue eyes look brighter

Postby admin » Sun May 13, 2007 8:50 am

I finally figured out how to make my baby's eyes look stunning in photographs! His eyes are naturally very blue but I've seen so many photos of kids on flickr.com with stunning eyes. I kept thinking - there is no way they are naturally that bright. But in photos, it looks amazing. I had a little time on Friday night and figured out how to do it!

In Photoshop, load your baby's photo...

1) Adjust the levels of the photo by sliding the right slider to the left, just enough so your entire photo brightens and lightens a bit.

2) Next, zoom in on both eyes by dragging the magnifying glass over both eyes

3) Use the Dodge Tool and adjust the size of the brush so it fits around the pupil of the eye

4) Change the settings of the Dodge Tool to highlights

5) Carefully move the Dodge brush over the colored part of the eye, going in a circle around the pupil. You should see the eye get lighter/brighter. Do this to both eyes. Repeat if you want it to be even lighter.

6) View your photo back at it's normal size and see if you like the effects!

ETA: 7) For extra sharp eyes, drag a selection (circle) around each eye (one at a time) and sharpen the eye area selected!

This also works in any graphics program with a Dodge Tool. I happen to use Macromedia Fireworks.

Here is the result:

Thats a pretty cool tip. My older Ds son has beautiful blue eyes but sometimes I think the camera can't capture it I would try that.

I'm still quite new to photography. Here is my before and after. I always watermark my children and photographs as I've had bad experiences before online. His eyes are blue but the way the light fell makes them look hazel.
