WB help

Postby victoria_1024 » Wed Jul 14, 2010 4:53 pm

Hey ladies!! I haven't been around much lately, sorry about that! I haven't been taking many photos lately, aside from snapshots.

But I just did a session for a 3 month old. He was a total fuss bucket, lol. I also did his newborn pictures and he was a fuss bucket then too! Anyway I have very few of him smiling but I did manage to capture a few in this position so I want them to look great. For some reason, the color is just not working for me. I can't get it right. All my other pictures, I've adjusted the WB and I've had zero problems but these images are giving me a headache. I need new eyes.

I'm wondering if there's some strange color cast that's making it hard to get the WB right??? Mom was wearing a red shirt.... just a thought I was having.

Anyway, here's my newest edit. I think it's close, but not quite there. Then again, maybe it's just fine and my eyes are tired.

 Come on Tasha, you're supposed to know this stuff!!

I just don't get it. I started over (yet again) and adjusted the WB, basically just took out a very little bit of yellow. I think the blanket looks a lot closer to it's actual color, but his face looks cool. I don't think it looks better. WTH?

I think your last try is the best. I'm not calibrated but I don't see the coolness in her face. I'm not sure what to tell ya on this :dunno:

You have too much yellow and red in the edit. Do you know how to do the WB dropper in levels? I'd make a duplicate layer from your original and then in levels, zoom in and sample the whitest stripe you can find on his shirt with the white dropper tool. That should help fix things a bit. You will probably have to tweak from there but if it's on a duplicate layer, you can adjust the opacity or go from there.

Thank you for the suggestion Elle. I duplicated the layer and played around a bit. I think maybe it's looking better now, I removed a teeny bit of red (trying not to remove so much that he looked colorless.... that's a concern for me!).

I am going to recalibrate today because it's been two weeks since I last did it. But I'm seeing yellow too, but it's odd because areas of his forehead are looking too cyan to me, and his lips are a little colourless.

What exactly did you do to edit the colour? Are you still using Elements?
If you use too many methods (curves, then selective colour, then colour balance, etc) you can get some really funky mixes in there, especially if you are just doing one edit on shadows, one on midtones, etc.

I'll have a play when the kids go to bed.

Adorable photo, I just love it!

eta - also I notice that your skintones always seem a bit yellow/orange. Mine ALWAYS come out too red. It's just the way the camera shoots. I don't use a gray card or anything anymore, I just eye ball it in LR and CS4. But I shoot in Neutral, edit in LR in Neutral, and automatically pull out some primary red in the camera calibration in LR, because I *know* that my camera has this weird attraction with reds (I also do most of my shooting outdoors, in the forest).

Thanks Blue! The funny thing is, I basically did nothing to edit this picture. Most of the editing I've been doing is moving the stupid WB sliders around in ACR. I added a teeny bit of an s-curve and that's it.

I'm not callibrated and I recently read that Macbook pro screens tend to look a little cool, so I'm wondering if that's why my skin tones look yellowish. I find that if I edit them cooler than what I normally like, people tell me the skin tones look good. :dunno:

Wow, Vic, this is the weirdest skin tones on a human beings I have ever ever seen. Like, holy paleness. Warming just makes him go yellower not "fleshier" and you can't move WB a fraction either way, so I'm afraid he's pretty colourless in my attempt too but I think I got the oranginess out of the shadows at least. This was not the full res RAW file, but I doubt you would have had much more luck with the RAW file anyway.

Here is my go, but it's not any better. Sorry! Wish I could help more!
Your edits are excellent, I think.I like the last one best.

eta whoops sorry forgot the pic!

Here is my play:
Image

From the sooc, I did:

white wb dropper using levels
another levels layers - increased blacks (left slider) and moved mid slider to left a bit
selected his face and feathered 30 px and added a color balance layer and adjusted the color on his face (added yellow)
bumped up curves just a teeeny bit

Cute baby! :)

Phew, I'm SO GLAD it's not just me having a tough time with this baby!!! Lol. I don't usually have such a hard time with color anymore. The rest of the session I'm editing just fine, I'm thinking there's gotta be some sort of funky color cast or something.

I have noticed while editing family pictures from the session that he is much much yellower than the parents though.

Thanks for the plays, it definitely helps to give me something else to reference.
