Recent studio work

Postby victoria_1024 » Sun Jan 09, 2011 7:54 pm

I have to admit, I am not a huge fan of studio work. It's so Sears portrait studio. But I'm prepared to embrace studio this winter (it was a high of like 3 degrees today, nobody wants me to do their baby's pictures outside for some reason??? haha) and see if I can improve. I've been slowly accumulating different studio stuff and recently bought a seamless paper stand... best thing ever.

These are all in people's houses (mine or others) using natural light. I can share settings if anyone's interested. CC welcome! :)

Those look great!!

I too am leary of looking too portrait studio-ish so I'm always looking for new ideas and props. I search through flickr pages, other photographer's websites, and magazines for ideas and inspiration. Also, when I shoot "on location", I tend to do just that. I'll use my backdrop and all but I try to also get some shots with things found at the location. I do have a strobe I use about half of the time so that gives some more versatility. It allows so much more time for shooting, especially in the winter, since I'm not so limited with daylight. And there are ways to make it look like a natural light source. I highly recommend Alien Bees, a worthy investment!

These are adorable Vic! I like #2!

I think you can close down a bit more in studio, since you don't need the bokeh? That way their hands and feet would be in focus.

I can't wait to get a studio set up! I just bought a backdrop stand and a shoot through umbrella, to go with my SB600. But since we're moving, no sense in getting it all set up now, I guess. Just to practice with my own kids, maybe.

Christina, thank you! I would love an alien bee, but way out of my price range right now! I've definitely researched it. Maybe one day!

Blue, I totally agree about closing down more, but I just don't have enough light to be able to do it. :? Since I'm using only windows or natural light, if I closed down anymore I would be underexposed. My rebel doesn't handle high ISOs very well, 400 is about the highest I can go!

I would definitely love to know your settings... so you weren't using any lighting besides for natural?

My settings were ss 1/200, ap 2.5, ISO 400. And yes, all natural light! The first set with the little boy were in my "studio" (aka dining room) with a huge set of windows off to camera left. The cake smash pictures the lighting wasn't great, but it was sliding glass doors off to camera left (she's at an angle to the doors). The last ones with the two girls had flatter lighting, one big window right in front of the girls.
