Hi everyone,

little intro, my name is Tressa, had a little girl 9 months ago and have been shooing endless photos of her since birth with a rebel xt. It's fairly old - think I've had it for 5-6 years but never wanted to use it as much as I have lately (new inspiration)

Some of you I know know from the breast feeding forum, it's fun to see you over here as well.

So here we go, my birthday was yesterday and DP is getting me a new camera. Went to the camera store yesterday and got way too confused *sigh* I wanted to trade up to a newer rebel (T2i) bc I think the 60D is too much camera for me lol however I thought I'd just buy the body only and upgrade to a better lens. However, CONFUSING!!!

any recs on lens? Here's what I want to do with it...mainly shooting kids, I'm still learning the manual modes so I'd like an auto focus/zoom. I'd love it to give a nice background blur as well. Right now I can only get that if the subject is really close, as is mainly just a head/shoulder shot but I'd love to be able to get full body shots with a soft background blur without having to manipulate it too much in photoshop. IS that possible for under $4-500?

I'm going back today but feeling so confused I'm tempted to just get the newer rebel with the kit lens and learn more about lens over the next year before deciding on which one to upgrade to?

so rebel T2i with kit lens or possibly growing into the 60D? They are similar in price - is that more camra than I'll ever need - I have no intentions of becoming a pro.

any advice is MUCH appreciated!

Thanks for reading :)

Hey Tressa, nice to see you over here! :yay:

Here is a thread with some thoughts on lenses:
http://www.twoweekwait.com/preg/communi ... c&t=188782

I shoot Nikon, not Canon, so I can't help you with the upgrade. I would buy a pro consumer lens camera (not the Rebel) or whatever you can and still be able to get a 50 mm 1.8 lens as well. It's a little harder to learn off a kit lens, because of the variable aperture (aperture changes as you zoom, so you need to adjust shutter speed as well). You can still learn very well about exposure, focus, etc but it's frustrating to always have to adjust the settings so much, and you can miss some great shots.

I would definitely recommend a 50mm 1.4, the 85mm 1.8. These are my two favorite lenses and the ones that I never leave home without!

If you're thinking of upgrading cameras, check out the Nikon D7000. I just got it a few weeks ago and it's amazing! Check it out on-line.

I have a 35mm 1.8 lens and I really like it. I love the wide open aperture for the blurred backgrounds and for low light.

Thanks everyone! Just getting home after a loooooong day and a confusing time at the camera shop! I ended up getting the Rebel T2i with a 50mm f1.8

I did check out the D7000...nice! Out of my price and skill level though - too "big" for me :) maybe in a few years!

The lens, I do wish it had a zoom. Do all zoom lenses have a variable aperture?

Great!!! You'll love that lens!

I don't love zooms ( I prefer to "zoom with my feet") but I will get one for vacations and such, where I don't have room to back up and in all the time. Or for studio work.

Not all zooms have a variable aperture. The one I'll end up with probably the 14-24 mm Nikon lens. It has a fixed aperture on it. These are pricier though, that lens will cost me $2000.
I have a 12-24 mm Nikon lens for my D90, but it doesn't work properly on my full frame D700 camera, because it's built for crop sensor cameras like my D90. I kept the D90, but would prefer to sell the 12-24 and buy the 14-24 instead which will work on the full frame without vignetting.

Thanks Blue, I get it now :) A fixed aperture zoom lens is beyond my skill level, maybe I'll grow into that option by next year.

Jess, I can not take credit for those photo's at all, but the flooring is a barnwood floor mat, similar to that of a mouse pad - it's a photo prop.

I love my 50mm f/1.8! :) I got it for Christmas and it's SO MUCH fun!

I love Me Ra Koh (http://www.merakoh.com/blog/) and her DVD series for learning how to shoot in manual. Me Ra and her husband Brian make it so easy to understand.

Congrats to you!
