low aperture lens recommendation

Postby Belle2625 » Fri Jun 03, 2011 10:29 am

I'm just learning how to use my dslr (i have a rebel xti) and I want to get a low aperture lens (1.8?) without breaking the bank.... any suggestions. I'm really after the sharp foreground and really blurry background look!.

Thanks

also, are you wanting a zoom or prime lens? does it matter as long as it's fast (e.g. large aperture)?

The 50mm 1.8 lens is a pretty standard lens when you're first starting out. You can get it for around 100ish dollars so it's affordable. If you can afford it, the 50mm 1.4 is a better lens but there's a big price difference.

If you're looking for more of an outdoor lens, the 85mm 1.8 lens is absolutely amazing. It's closer to $400 and I really can't use it indoors. But I LOVE it.

I don't know much about zoom lenses (I can't afford them, lol) so I can't help you much there!

If I was going to get a zoom lens, I would probably want the 28-75mm 2.8. If you get the canon version, it's over $1000. The tamron version is closer to 500. I have never used tamron so I can't say for sure how good the lens is but many photographers use tamron and seem to like it.

I just got the 50mm 1.8 and should have done it a loooooooong time ago! I know it's the cheapest one but it's better than nothing for getting that lovely bokeh (blurred background). The main downside is that focus has been a challenge, but I've always had focusing issues so maybe it's just me. LoL. I paid $130 which is normal retail, worth every penny!

50 is a great lens! I don't use mine much anymore (mostly my 85 1.2 and 70-200 2.8 now), but it is a great lens!

My recommendation would be to actually forego the Canon 1.8 and get the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 for Canon mount. It is a little more expensive, yes, but I think it's actually quite comparable to the Canon 50 1.2, but a lot more durable and reliable than the Canon 1.4. Just my $.02 :)
