My Photo Editing Tutorial - One colored item in b&w pic

Postby Felix&MaxMama » Sun Nov 11, 2007 9:16 am

I got some requests for this... so I will try to give you a little tutorial here on Paint.net.

The first thing you have to do is download Paint.net at http://www.getpaint.net/
It is free and without a bunch of ads and such. My brother is a graphic artist and works with Photoshop and he said they were pretty similar.

The first lesson I'll explain is how to keep a colored item in a black and white picture. There is a misconception that I COLOR an item after turning it black and white. You have to select the color item BEFORE you turn your picture in black and white.

First, identify what you want to keep in color (a toy, glasses, blanket, etc). And select that item. You can select with two different tools, the magic wand or the lasso. The magic wand is perfect if your item is all the same color and well defined. If your item has several colors in it, you might want to take the lasso. It takes a little practice, but after a while you become pretty good at selecting your item.

You can select in one shot (by left clicking with your mouse) or in several shots by holding the CTRL key down. If you select something and change your mind, you can UNSELECT with by right clicking with your mouse (NOT hodling the CTRL key at the time). It sounds more complicated than it is but you will need some practice.

After your item is selected, you need to REVERSE your selection, that is select what you want in black and white. Do so by holding CTRL and the letter I. Now you should have everything selected in your picture EXCEPT what you want to keep in color. You then chose ADJUSTMENTS and BLACK AND WHITE. And voilà! Your picture is now in black and white with one colored item!

Practice and post your pictures here!! You can PM me if you have questions!

Here's an exemple of one I made:

Just for a comparison, I have Photoshop Elements 6 and here are some of the things I've done. I agree the programs do very similar work.

And here's one with selective color and texturized images.

Wow, I can't believe how nice everyone's picture turned out....

Ok... for the magic wand, it is tricky! Depending on what you want to select, you will need to work with the 50 % thingy on the top of your screen. The higher the % is, the larger the selection of that color will be (if you go for the yellow of a truck, let's say... the if you pick 75 % that means that very light yellow and very dark yellow will be picked).

That is when holding the CTRL key down helps! You can select small areas at a time!
