IVF/ICSI and First Trimester Screening

Postby ptcruzer80 » Wed May 16, 2012 8:30 am

Hi Ladies,

I'm pregnant for the very first time after 5 years of TTC, 3 failed IUIs, the diagnosis of unexplained infertility, and one successful IVF/ICSI cycle. I wanted to share my experience with you in case anyone else goes through this.

I've been dealing with a SCH (subchorionic hematoma) since I started bleeding at 9w/4d. Was told that these are really common with IVF pregnancies, my RE said about 50% of his IVF patients have one.

Monday (5/14) I had my NT Scan at 12w/4d. The SCH is slowly resolving itself, yeah! But I did have slightly lower than normal PAPP-A levels and slightly higher than normal beta HCG levels. This along with a slightly wider nuchal fold (2.7mm) gave me a 1:31 risk for a baby with Down Syndrome. Scary, right? We opted to skip invasive testing (CVS, amnio) as there's a new maternal blood test that is 99.9% accurate in identifying babies with DS. Here's a link: http://www.sequenomcmm.com/home/health- ... QAodljS0lw

I should have my results back in about a week and I'm not too worried. Here's why, according to some studies done IVF/ICSI pregnancies commonly have lower PAPP-A levels and higher beta HCG levels without being linked to DS. I just wanted to share this information in case any of you are in my shoes, to give a bit of peace of mind.

Here's the links to the studies:

One would assume such studies are common knowledge among Maternal Fetal Medicine specialists and/or genetic counselors; however, it wasn't brought up what-so-ever as a possible cause of our increased risk. I should get my results back for the Maternity21 test next week (5/21).

COngrats on your pregnancy! Just wanted to share that I also had a SCH with my most recent singleton pregnancy who was a FET. We also opted to skip all invasive testing and everything turned out fine! I think these things do happen a lot with IVf pregnancies..I was worried sick about it. So hopefully some other ladies will read this and feel better that things can def. resolve and everything can turn out fine !

Thanks for sharing Twinklebug! And I totally agree with you about the SCH in IVF pregnancies.

I just wanted to update that the SCH is gone at around 15 weeks or so. I recently had my anatomy scan (more detailed) and the MFM specialist said the SCH was definitely gone. Also, my little boy is perfectly normal despite that initial worry about DS.

I just wanted to share my story to reassure others who may be in my shoes
