What do you consider Preemie?

Postby LoveVaeh » Wed Feb 16, 2011 3:54 am

Hi! I don't have a recent preemie... but my 6 y/o was born at 34/35 weeks and I, personally, consider her as a premature baby. She is fine now, but some people have told me that I should stop saying she was premature because she is too old now. Basically, when they ask why I couldn't breastfeed her, I tell them that she was prem and my lack of support and education on it I gave up.

She had no NICU time (Thank God)...

I lurk here a lot and I am wondering if you all would be offended by it if I ever posted or whatever.

You're still welcome to post. It's as much about sharing our experiences to support the new prem mums as it is discussing your own prem troubles.

Talia is now 3.5 (and a bit) actual age, though I've pretty much stopped correcting (though I prefer the look of her weight on a corrected chart rather than actual  ). She was discharged from the NICU follow up clinic at 3 years corrected and was all normal developmentally. So technically we don't need to stress so much about the prem thing.

But I've still had a lot of valuable experiences, and years of reading and absorbing info on prems gives me a lot of resources to help other parents through here.

So post, however old your prem is. It's still a valid experience.

I agree fully with Pixie. Your baby was a premie. A baby doesn't have to be super tiny, or need a nicu stay to justify his/her "premie" status. Having a baby eary, no matter how great the outcome has a whole set of thoughts, feelings, worries that go with it, so yes, post away. :) Anyone who would be offended at that should ask themselves why.

If you consider your baby a preemie, then I do too. But generally when I speak of a preemie, I am talking prior tp 37 weeks because by definition that is it here. But I consider babies born earlier then 38 weeks to be premature.

You definitely had a preemie, and you are welcome to post here any time you want. I don't care if your preemie is 20 years old - you still have some valuable experiences that you can share with all of the new preemie mamas.
