My little man... Seth Declan

Postby GrowingmyGrogan » Sun Feb 27, 2011 4:18 pm

I've been lurking on this site since our son was born by emergency c-section at 29weeks 0days on February 19th due to severe preeclampsia. My vision hasn't been the same since and I haven't been able to use the computer very well, but I thought I'd give introducing myself a shot tonight since I can't sleep and still hospitalized. LOL

Here's our latest update...

After a bumpy last week with a Necrotizing Enterocolitis (bowel perforation) scare, this week has started off with a bang!!

Seth has been taken off ventilation completely and has been breathing entirely on his own for 24 hours now, maintaining saturation levels of 98-100%. The surgeon decided the drainage tube (that Seth pulled out himself night before last) will remain out because his perforation is healing so well and the drainage from the site is exactly what they want to see.

His umbilical line was removed today and an IV placed in his hand instead. He'll be fed through the IV for another month or so while his bowel heals properly.

The surgeon also ran new scans and found his PDA (patent ductus arteriosus) has closed and his cerebral bleeding is so low grade that he's not looking at surgery of any kind at the moment. He also finished his first round of phototherapy so his space helmet came off this morning and we got to stare at his cute little face all day. It's amazing how little teeny-tiny yawns can melt your heart ♥
Seth's doctor says if he keeps this up we'll begin kangaroo care in no time :)

Here's some pic's of our little man. Sorry there's so many. It's so hard to pic just one...

first things first congrats on your beautiful baby boy.
im so happy that he is doing well...kanagroo care is the most amazing thing in the world. keep pushing for it, i founf that there were some nurses that wouldnt allow it and others that would. if the baby is not under photo lights, you should be able to kanagroo....
i hope you get to experience that teeny little body against your very soon.
kup and if you need to chat about anything pm.

I know that I have already congratulated you on facebook, but I say congrats on here as well. Did he have NEC as well as the perforation?

Beautiful pictures! As pp said definitely start pushing for the kangaroo care. My NICU always had excuses why I couldn't hold her and finally I started standing up and saying this is bull and even spoke to the doctors and told them about so many articles I read and the proof that kangaroo care really works.

It sounds like it's been a big week and he's making great strides. Kiran also pulled out that tube and when she did the doctors finally decided she didn't need it anymore.

My vision didn't come back to normal for a while, maybe a month or even 2. I actually went to the eye doctor to see if there was any lasting damage and knock on wood, I got lucky. I am slightly near sighted and I believe it is from the pre E because I had Lasik and 15/20 before, but it's not bad enough that I need glasses YET!

Has your BP stabilized yet? My bp didn't for about 2 weeks. I was sent home with two meds and a very strict schedule and my husband had to call me when I was supposed to take another one because I was sick still.

I hope Cristol doesn`t mind me updating. Seth had surgery for NEC today and had 5cm of his small intestine removed. He was vented again as well as getting a blood transfusion right now. His tube was put back in to pump his belly out again. Lots of prayers please.
