Only one kidney

Postby DoulaMama » Tue Mar 02, 2010 10:00 am

We just found out that our LO has no right kidney at all.
The left is slightly enlarged, but they say they WANT to see that as it is doing a bit of extra work for there being no right one.
Anyways, of course it was not the best news to get but we are staying optomistic and know that, it could be way worse.

Has anyone else had a babe, or heard of a babe that was born with only 1 kidney??

Hi CanadianMama
I am so sorry!!! It is so hard to find out that something is not right with the baby, and it defintitely causes much so much anxiety and stress. I have been there.
My baby was born with only one functioning kidney. His other kidney did not work at all, and they eventually removed it. His one kidney is very large, which is great because that means that it is overcompensating for the lack of the other one. In the course of what I was going through, I found many comforting stories of people living with one kidney.
For example: The perinatologist that we worked with, has had only one kidney for his whole life. He hasn't had any complications and he is middle-aged. Years ago, before prenatal u/s, many people were born with only one kidney and they didn't even find out unless by mistake of having some test run later in life.
A man that I knew most of my life... he was skiing, ended up crashing into a tree, and while testing for internal bleeding, they found out that only 1/3 of one kidney was functional. His other kidney never developed past infancy and did not work at all. He has been great and has had no complications.
My little man is almost 17 months old and he is doing great!! I wish you all the best!

hoping4another - you don't even know how much your words have truly comforted me...well, actually you probably do. ;)
Thank you so much for taking the time to respond and let me know your personal story and other stories that you have heard.
I have also heard many stories about many people who only have 1 kidney and only found out in adulthood.

I guess my biggest concern is that: on the only kidney babe has they also found 2 tiny cysts which they assure us are nothing. The doctor himself said that he has had a large cyst on his his whole life with no complications....it still worries me a bit though as that is the only kidney babe has, and we need it in tip top shape!
His/her kidney was also enlarged which they told us (like you said) is a great thing.

Thanks so much again :)

My aunt, now in her 60's , has only ever had one kidney and has two children, so there is no issue, other then she has to take care of the one she has :) Stressful to find out there is anything wrong with your LO - I hope the rest of our pregnancy is uneventful.

Thanks so much jk :)

We got a bit more news today as well: the left kidney that the babe has has 2 small cysts on it.
We will need to monitor it closely (via u/s) to see if the cysts change in size or number (which we are praying they don't). If they stay the same size, or even better, shrink then we are happy campers

I hope the cysts turn out to be nothing!! My DH's aunt was born with just one kidney. She's in her 50s now, never had a problem. Then DH lost functioning of his kidney during a complication from heart surgery last year and the doctors made it sound like it wasn't a big deal. It actually seems to be pretty common.

My friend has a 2 year old who was born with one kidney. He is healthy but gets tired easily it seems. Not sure if that has anything to do with the missing kidney or not. He was also born with a hand defect, again not sure if it`s related. But anyway, he`s a bright, beautiful little boy who enjoys playing with his brothers just like any other child. :)
