Adjusting to Kindergarten

Postby Lala » Wed Aug 15, 2012 4:46 pm

Any new kindergarten moms? My baby boy will start next week. Today, we went to meet his new teacher. I hope I can hold it together when I drop him off on Monday. :?

Yes, my DD will be starting Kindergarten on the 4th of September. We have a teach conference on Monday.

How did the conference go? I know I am going to cry when I drop her off. My baby girl is growing up.

My son started this last Monday. I won't lie, the first day was really rough. I fell apart on the way to drop him off, but I was able to hold it together once we got out--I didn't want him to see me cry and add to any anxiety he was feeling. I just stared at the clock the entire day, willing it to move faster. What helped me is when I picked him up and he was SO happy and SO excited to tell me all about his day. He has looked foward to everyday this week and is actually bummed that he has to have some days off this weekend.

Each day has gotten progressively easier for me. On Tuesday I started taking my 1-year-old with me on a run immediately after dropping him off. It helps my mornings go quicker, gets my run out of the way, and lets me clear my head and not think so much about how much I miss him.

We tackled our first full week of kinder!

We had our conference last Friday and I was told (based on his pre placement questions) that he is academically ready. We discussed a few things in his IEP and the things they will learn in kindergarten.

When I dropped him off on Monday morning I could not hold it together. As soon as we found his teacher and his line, I told him to line up, gave him a kiss, and then lost it. I couldn’t hold it in! I cried the whole way home. :(

DS has been very tired this week. Every night it has been a fight at bedtime. I can tell he is exhausted. Also, last night he had a bad dream. I am so glad this week is over and I’m sure he is glad too!

Lala- I know it has to be hard as he is going non-stop for 7-8 hours a day, no nap. Can you explain what the evaluation process is like? They asked your DS questions or does he take some type of test?

My DD has her conference on Monday before she starts school.

The process was fast and simple. His new teacher basically asked him questions while I filled out paper work. She asked him things such as, can you name the letters in this row, then shapes, etc. Then she read a short story and asked him things about the book.

It wasn't nearly as intense as I had thought it would be. Also, his teachers have a "rest" period. DS has to take a nap mat to school. I like this idea because DS for sure needs a rest period throughout the busy day.

HTH :)

It went well. The teacher did not ask any questions to DD. However, DH made sure that the teacher knows how smart our daughter is. She reads at a 3rd to 4th grade level, and my DH wanted to make sure the teacher knows that. :D He asked DD to read from a flyer she had hanging up and she did. The teacher asked my DD to bring a book to school so my DD could read it to her.

Today is her first day at school. She was very excited. She has her own locker. 8O They have story time and vocab in the morning. They eat lunch at 11 to 11:30, they get to go outside a play 11:30-11:50. 12:00-12:50 is math, than they have center time they can do what they want. Than after that social/studies, center time again.

Lala- Is your LO adjusting fine? What is the schedule like? Will you be packing a lunch, or paying for caf food?

WOW, that is awesome! I would be proud and let that be known too. It sounds like she will do just fine.

DS isn't adjusting well. It has been a struggle for him because he went from 9 kids in his class at special education preschool to 24 kids and only 20% of special education. His behavior has been horrible and yesterday he got a slip sent home for not being a good listener. It has been a challenging week for everyone.

Tomorrow night we go for open house and an ice cream social. We are looking forward to it.

He eats in the cafeteria. I like the new standards for food in schools and I let him choose whether he wanted to take his lunch or not. He likes the fact that he has multiple choices to pick from.

Lala- I am sure your DS will adjust fine. It will just take time.

My DD likes to talk a lot and that is her main problem. Sometimes she doesn't know when to be quite. In the morning, she didn't listen twice. One for not cutting the picture up, and the second for not putting away things. Afternoon, she did fine. My DH went to visit her at lunch time and she had that look on her face when he showed up, he knew right away she had done something wrong. He had a talk with her, and she was fine in the afternoon.

I think most kids it is an adjustment, because it is more structured. They don't get naps. Unlike when she was in Pre-K. She had more independent time in Pre-K, so she could just do what she pleased most of the day.

As far as lunch, we put 50 dollars on her lunch card, should last the month. So we will see how that goes for now.
